Happy Anniversary!

The Hoxton Hotel London

I’ve just realised that I never got round to writing about our wedding anniversary, which was at the end of September. DorkyDad did say at the time that he was going to write me a guest post about it, but to be quite honest I think he has been working hard to forget it…

It was our fifth anniversary. We haven’t had many any nights out together since we moved house, so when we chatted over the summer about celebrating such a big occasion, we thought we’d do something quite special. But as the date came closer and other commitments were scribbled in both our diaries, we had to scale down our ambitions. Dreams of a long weekend by ourselves in Paris turned into dreams of a weekend somewhere on the Kent coast, and then, eventually to a night in London, chaperoned by DorkySon.

Our anniversary was a Saturday. Friday night was the Mad Blog Awards. Before I left on Friday afternoon, DorkyDad and DorkySon followed a treasure hunt that I had created around the house, at the end of which was an envelope containing a restaurant menu, a hotel booking and a bag of jellybeans. That set the romantic tone of the weekend right there. Continue reading

One Year On…

Last week marked one year exactly since we moved from Edinburgh to Hertfordshire, and I am pretty proud of how we are doing.

DorkySon has settled amazingly well in his new nursery – it has been an absolute delight seeing him grow in confidence, become so much more curious about the world he lives in, and spend the majority of his time as an incredibly happy wee boy. He is a lot of fun to spend time with right now.

DorkyDad is working harder than I have ever seen, learning new skills and absorbing information about a sector he hasn’t worked in before, travelling to parts of the world he never imagined visiting, and trying hard not to let the unpleasantness of a daily commute get him down.

I feel like I have whinged quite a bit about things since we moved – and it’s no secret that we don’t want to live here forever – but it has also brought some amazing opportunities for us all.

So I decided to have a read back through some of my blog posts, and reflect on ten things – big and small – that we would not have had the chance to do if we hadn’t made the move. Continue reading

Early Morning

For once I remembered to take my camera with me this morning, and after I’d dropped DorkySon at nursery I spent about twenty minutes messing around with it in the park. All the webs look so beautiful when they’re covered in dew, butI really need to get a tripod so that I can do my macro lens justice. There were lots more lovely shots that I wanted to get, but my hands were too shaky.

I ended up having a funny wee chat with a little boy who was on his way to school. He stopped and got off his scooter to see what I was up to – you could almost see him thinking ‘What’s that crazy lady doing crouching over in the bushes?’ – and asked to see some of the pictures on my camera. He liked the ones with spiders in, but thought the leaf ones were boring.

Always nice to get some honest feedback…

Autumn, lovely Autumn

On the spur of the moment, when I dropped DorkySon at nursery yesterday, I decided to go for a walk instead of going straight home. The light is so beautiful on these autumn mornings that it seems a shame to waste it.

Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera so these are just phone quality photos, but they still give a sense of what a lovely half hour I had ambling through the fields.
