Map Geekery

Barefoot Books atlas

I mentioned in my BritMums post earlier in the week that once I’ve fulfilled my current commitments I’m not going to do any reviews on the blog… but that doesn’t mean that I can’t still have a big old gush about a company if I love them. This is one of those gushes.

I’ve always been a map geek. I love them. Sometimes when I was a wee girl, instead of asking for a bedtime story, I used to sit with my Dad or my Grandpa and pore over a map of some place I’d never visited before. Maybe the Pennines, or Kansas, or Madagascar – it didn’t really matter – maps meant possibilities, adventures, fulfilling dreams. I had a brilliant jigsaw puzzle of the world, where all the countries were different colours, and you had to work out how they fitted together.

I am only slightly embarrassed to admit that I never really grew out of the map geekery; when I was eighteen I won the award for being the top geography student in Scotland. Give me a packet of colouring pencils and a map to colour in, and it still makes me happy.

A wee jaunt, and a birthday

Portobello Beach

It has been a subdued sort of week here, which has been reflected in the lack of blog posts. We are all very happy… we’ve just been having some downtime after a busy spell.

DorkyDad has had a lot of work travel recently, so DorkySon and I got the train up to Edinburgh last weekend and spent a couple of nights staying with DorkyGranny. It was really nice to be there, although with it being such a short trip I only had time to see a couple of friends, and not everyone I would have liked to. Having seen how easy it is to get up there on my own with DorkySon, and how well it filled the time when DorkyDad was away, we’ll definitely be going up again before too long.

The Right to Education

I saw a wonderful piece of news today about people using social media for good. Take a look at this story about a demonstration of Israeli-Iranian solidarity – started online by ordinary people – that has really taken off.

It has warmed the very cockles of my heart, and provided a very useful reminder that behind almost every news story – good and bad – there are ‘ordinary people’. Every conflict, every crime, and every Government Bill has an impact on folk that more often than not are just like you and me.

Palestine Israel Separation Wall

I haven’t blogged about this before, but a few years ago I was lucky enough to visit the West Bank – part of the occupied Palestinian Territories. At the time, I was President of my Students’ Association, and the student body had voted to twin our university – Edinburgh – with the University of Birzeit near Ramallah.

Ben and Jerry: They’re Good Guys

Ben and Jerry's

I was so chuffed to see my old buddies Ben and Jerry in the news this week, supporting the equal marriage campaign. They have partnered with Stonewall to rename their Oh My Apple Pie flavour Apple-y Ever After. A Ben and Jerry’s Facebook app invites you to ‘marry’ someone of the same sex, and they’ve got a template letter up online for emailing your MP in support of same sex marriage.

Project 52: Week 8

I am breaking all sorts of self-imposed rules here. I don’t very often put family photos on the blog. I promised that my Project 52 photos would be of things other than DorkySon. And this is my third post about our holiday, which seems a bit excessive.

But I love this shot so much that I really want to post it as my Week 8 photo.

DorkySon and DorkyDad: they’ve got a good thing going on.
