Do you remember a few weeks ago I wrote a post about how nice it is to receive a handwritten letter in the post, and how sad I am that it happens so rarely these days?
I was a bit overwhelmed by the lovely response to that post, and all the sweet comments I received on the blog. But I was even more touched a couple of days letter when I got another handwritten envelope through the mailbox. This one was also kinda chunky…
My sweet, kind and immensely talented new Englandshire friend Emily, whose blog posts and photography you can find over at The Startup Wife, had sent me a stash of letter writing goodies – beautiful notecards, patterned envelopes, heart-shaped paperclips… even some stickers!
It made me a bit teary-eyed, if I’m honest. It was such a thoughtful thing to do.
Tonight I have taken that little bit of handwritten love and paid it forward. I’ve finally made the time to sit down and write those letters that I’ve been promising people for months. I don’t have much new, or exciting, or interesting to say, but I’m trying to connect and to let my friends know that I care.
I had hoped to do it on holiday. I was going to send postcards. But when you find yourself on an island with no postal service, there’s not much you can do.
So tonight I have written letters. And it feels good. The words are all mine. The shoddy handwriting is all mine. The non-news is mine too.
But the inspiration – the beautiful cards, the nudge to sit down and do it, and the stickers (most importantly, the stickers!) – are Emily’s.

You’ve made me feel guilty. Been meaning to send letters to some friends I haven’t heard from for a while. Might manage it over Easter. I LOVE stationery! Am very envious of the paper clips!!

How wonderful! I love, love letter writing but all too often life gets in the way. I have 2 penfriends who i write on and off to one for 5 years and one for 3 i think its lovely when letters drop through your door. I now postcross with postcards too which is lovely x
I’ve been meaning to check out Postcross. Love postcards too – although wonder if the increase in price of stamps will discourage people? x
I received a letter in the post from my oldest friend at Christmas. It made me cry! I’ve been meaning to sit down and write one back since then, but haven’t had time. I’m going to make the time this weekend after reading this. I’m inspired. Thank you x

There’s nothing nicer than a handwritten letter, particularly when the stationery is so beautiful. My son is only 16 months old but I’d really like to set a good example for him by handwriting thank you cards at Christmas and at birthdays. Might start hanging round stationery shops rather than toy ones.
Buy him some wee stampers or stickers so he can have fun with the letters too 🙂 xx
